Twitter Places to challenge Foursquare and Gowalla?

Twitter announced today at the chrip conference that it is planning a new feature that will link geo-tagged tweets to an actual place. Not exactly a “check-in” feature like in Foursquare or Gowalla, but twitter is trying to get into that space.

According to Business Insider, both Denis Crowley of Foursquare and Josh Williams of Gowalla don’t seem to be threatened by Twitter’s announcements.
